THE VISUAL POETRY OF ART IN BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS
Sonya Fichte is a contemporary, self–taught art photographer from Slovakia, whose work in the world of fashion, and art directing led her to take the camera and develop her photographic instinct.
Sonya crafts black and white photographs sometimes painted or drawn over. Inspired by artists such as Richard Avedon, Charles Bukowski, Franz Kafka, Andy Warhol, and Jan Saudek - her snapshots highlight the ghostly movements that are achieved at low speeds, where femininity, symbols, and sexual tension converge with a hint of magical hyper-realism, embodied with elegant mastery and an overwhelming photographic technique. Towards animality, towards the timelessness of photography, and the narrative short, precise, and permanent with high contrast.
In a world where the sovereignty of photoshop governs everything, where the artificial and virtual bodies are a constant, Fichte proposes freeing us from existential anguish by showing spontaneous bodies transmuted through photography into abstract art, into a concept, into an alternative perspective of existence. It is a return to the world as a representation. Through her photographic work, Sonya uses her lens to express the relationship between the mundane and the sublime, the light and the dark, romantically and nostalgic. One of the principal aspects of her work has to do with exploring the subject´s emotions and true self in a therapeutic manner.
She has participated in collective exhibitions in Oaxaca and Mexico City. Year 2022, she exhibited one of her pieces at Zona Maco (the largest Latino-American art fair). Continued in New York photography show and Art Miami ( Art Basel)
